Waynesville is a growing mountain town that is expanding
to offer it's residents and visitors even more, while
effortlessly maintaining it’s quaint-town reputation. Waynesville is a town rich in history
that can be seen by taking a drive down Main Street. Old-town architecture decorates the small mountain town
that is full of dining and shopping opportunities.
The town was founded in 1809 by Colonel Robert
Love, a soldier in the Revolutionary War.
He donated the land for the courthouse, jail,
and public square, and then named the town after
his commander in the war, General "Mad" Anthony
Wayne. Waynesville also has historical
ties to the Civil War. When news of Robert E.
Lee's surrender traveling slowly, the war
continued in Western North Carolina. The
final shots of the Civil War were fired near Sulphur Springs in "the Battle of Waynesville".
Adjacent to downtown Waynesville is the railroad district. The railroad arrived
in Waynesville in 1884, and the agricultural,
lumber, and tourism industries began to
flourish. The Waynesville was called "Frog
Level" because of it's low-lying location along
Richland Creek. The 1900 depot burned, and was
later replaced with another that remained
